The Arusha Declaration described Tanzania’s political vision of Ujamaa socialism (roughly translated as family spirit and coexistence). Self-reliance (‘kujitegemea’) as a central principle emphasised independence and the struggle for liberation from Western and European powers. In memory of decolonisation and the Ujamaa period, the museum was established in the building where the declaration was adopted by the then ruling party, TANU. It illustrates the social and economic developments that contributed to the emergence of modern Tanzania.
