Kigoma is a port city on Lake Tanganyika near the borders with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo in western Tanzania. The city is the terminus of the Central Line (formerly the Tanganyika Railway), a railway line that once ran across Tanzania from the coast via Dodoma to the west.
For many tourists, Kigoma is the starting point for visits to Gombe and Mahale National Parks, known for their chimpanzee populations. Ujiji is home to the rather uncritical Livingstone Memorial Museum, which commemorates the historic meeting between journalist Henry Morton Stanley and African explorer David Livingstone. The two imperialists are portrayed as white saviours. Architectural traces of German East Africa can be seen in Kigoma in the old boma, a church, a school and the cemetery.
