Songea: Maji Maji Museum

The Maji Maji Museum was officially opened in 1980, by Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, and was built by the then Regional Commissioner named Dr. Laurance Mtazama Gama in collaboration with the people of Ruvuma Region to recognize the contribution of the people of Ruvuma Region for their participation in fighting the Maji Maji War.

You are very welcome to the Maji Maji War Museum so that you can learn about the history of the Maji Maji War, the history of Wangoni as well as the cultures of the people of the Ruvuma Region. Walk through the Exhibition Hall and learn about the history of the Maji War. Visit the Cemetery where they buried about 66 Majimaji War Heroes, who were executed by the Germans on February 27, 1906. Visit the Maji Maji Annual Cultural Festival in February, which commemorates them. Visit the Grave of Nduna Songea Luwafu Mbano who was buried without a head and whose head is still in Germany. Visit the area where the Majimaji War Heroes were executed. Visit the First Court used by the Germans to try all Africans who opposed their rule. Visit Peramiho where the Wangoni Chief Mputa Gwazerapasi Gama lived and also visit Maposeni where the Wangoni used to worship and later the area was burned by Father Franciscus and later the Father was killed by Kingoni soldiers. The place where the German Father was killed has a memorial monument built.
