Arusha, located in north-eastern Tanzania, is a cosmopolitan, vibrant city that is considered a centre for tourism. Due to its location near the popular Serengeti and Ngorongoro National Parks and the high number of tourists, Arusha is also known as ‘Dar es Safari’. German and British colonisation left their mark on the city’s architecture as well as on the surrounding area, where coffee and sisal plantations, among other things, were established. During the colonial period, Arusha developed into an important trading centre. The metropolis also played an important role in the struggle for independence. The declaration in which the first Tanzanian president, Julius Nyerere, described his Ujamaa vision of socialism and self-reliance in 1967 was given its name.
