Dar es Salaam: Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden Dar (c) Henriette Seydel

The Dar es Salaam Botanical Garden was founded in 1893 during the German colonial period by Dr Franz Stuhlmann, the first director of the Biological-Agricultural Institute in Amani. It was originally used as a testing ground for the cultivation of export crops such as rubber, teak, coffee, tea and cotton. Many of the seeds came from the Botanical Garden in Berlin. Over time, the garden evolved from a scientific testing ground to a more decorative green space.

Today, the garden is maintained by the Horticultural Society, which cares for numerous native and exotic plant species, including jacaranda, cycads, palms and flame trees. The garden offers a shady, peaceful oasis in the midst of the bustling city and is a lasting legacy of the German colonial era.
